In a major boost to Telangana’s clean energy ambitions, state-run power giant NTPC Ltd. has announced a massive ₹80,000 crore investment plan for renewable energy projects across the state. The move signals a significant step towards achieving both state and national green energy targets. ⚡
The commitment was formalized in a recent meeting between NTPC’s Chairman and Managing Director, Gurdeep Singh, and Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The Chief Minister’s office confirmed that the state government has pledged its full cooperation to facilitate these ambitious projects.
A Focus on Solar Innovation
The investment will primarily target the development of solar, wind, and innovative floating solar power projects, aiming for a cumulative capacity of 6,700 MW. Floating solar installations, which utilize the surface of reservoirs and other water bodies, are a key part of the strategy. This approach not only generates clean power but also conserves land and can reduce water evaporation.
To manage this significant influx of green power, the state’s infrastructure is also set for a major upgrade. Telangana Transco has already proposed eight critical transmission schemes to the Central Electricity Authority. Valued at ₹6,895 crore, these schemes are designed to build the necessary infrastructure to evacuate, or transport, up to 19 GW of renewable energy from power plants across eight districts to the main grid, ensuring the energy generated reaches consumers efficiently.
National Policy Alignment
This substantial state-level investment is strongly supported by recent national policy changes. The Indian Cabinet recently quadrupled NTPC’s green energy investment cap, raising it from ₹7,500 crore to ₹20,000 crore. This decision is designed to fast-track NTPC’s overarching goal of generating 60 GW of renewable energy nationwide by 2032.
The investment in Telangana is a cornerstone of this national strategy, transforming the state’s energy landscape while perfectly aligning with India’s broader decarbonization goals and commitment to a sustainable future.
