Ganguly Backs India for Asia Cup Glory, Weighs in on Rohit-Virat ODI Future

Former BCCI president and cricket legend Sourav Ganguly has voiced strong confidence in India’s chances at the upcoming T20 Asia Cup in Dubai (September 9–28). Speaking to media, Ganguly described India as “very strong in white-ball cricket, even stronger than in red-ball,” adding that on Dubai’s favorable pitches, “beating India will be very tough.”

Addressing the much-anticipated India vs. Pakistan clash, Ganguly stressed the need to keep politics out of sport. “Sport must go on,” he said, urging focus on the game rather than political tensions.

On Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI Future
With speculation swirling about potential ODI retirements for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—possibly during the upcoming Australia tour—Ganguly remained cautious. “I’m not aware of this, can’t comment on this,” he said, adding that selection should remain merit-based. “Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue.”

Praising both players as “phenomenal” in white-ball cricket, Ganguly underscored their immense contributions to the format. The BCCI, meanwhile, has made no immediate decisions about their ODI futures, choosing to keep attention on the T20 World Cup and Asia Cup campaigns.
